Tottenham Hotspur attacker Erik Lamela failed to have the desired impact after being brought off the bench against Olympiacos.

Michael Owen has told BT Sport’s Champions League highlight show, which was broadcast on 18th September, that Tottenham Hotspur’s Erik Lamela made an unforgivable error last night.

Lamela was brought on as a substitute for Tottenham as they searched for a winning goal against Olympiacos, but he wasted a great opportunity.

The Argentine danced past two Olympiacos defenders to get to the byline, but decided to shoot from a tight angle, rather than simply knock the ball to Harry Kane, who was ready to tap it in.

Kane was visibly furious was his Tottenham teammate during the match.

And Owen said: “I think with Lamela, you can’t forgive him. It’s not a chance, you can’t score there. You score there one in 20. You have got to lift your head up. You can see his [Harry Kane’s] reaction, because he knows he would have passed there.”

Lamela has actually been in good form for Spurs this season, but his greedy decision may have cost Tottenham three points last night.

Lamela was hardly solely to blame for Spurs failing to win in Greece though.

The Lilywhites had a poor evening all round, with Harry Winks the only player to really escape from the game with any credit.

Spurs are next in action against Leicester City, where they will be looking for a much improved display.
