Manchester City fans were given a tantalising glimpse of the future during Wednesday night’s 3-0 Champions League win away at Shakhtar Donestk.

With the game wrapped up in a neat little package, with goals from Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus putting the error-prone Ukrainians to the sword, Joao Cancelo stepped off the bench to make just his second appearance in City colours – and his first since that 60-second cameo against Bournemouth.

And in just 10 minutes on the Metalurst Stadium, Cancelo has already won over the supporters desperate to see their new £60 million signing in action (the Sun).

There is a reason why Cancelo has represented Benfica, Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus and now Manchester City at the age just of 25, all the while earning 16 caps for the Portuguese national team, and a right-back who has the touch and class of a top-class number ten looks tailor made for Pep Guardiola.

The 2019 Serie A champion is the very definition of the modern-day full-back and with mistakes starting to creep into Kyle Walker’s game, this feels like the beginning of the Joao Cancelo era at Manchester City.
