West Ham United reportedly wanted to take La Liga midfielder Joan Jordan to the Premier League but he couldn’t turn down Sevilla.
With Mexico legend Javier Hernandez, former Manchester City starlet Rony Lopes and Eredivisie Golden Boot winner Luuk de Jong all heading to Andalusia this summer as part of the annual summer rebuild at Sevilla, a £13 million deal for Joan Jordan went somewhat under the radar.
Jordan had established himself as one of La Liga’s more underrated midfielders during two years pulling the strings at perennial overachievers Eibar. But few expected that the 25-year-old would explode quite so dramatically in his new surroundings.
Four games into the new La Liga season, no midfielder in the Spanish top flight has been quite as impressive as the diminutive ball-player from North East Catalonia. He’s scored two match-winning goals already, including a sumptuous, Andrea Pirlo-style free-kick away to Alaves last weekend.
According to the CIES Football Observatory, provided by El Desmarque, Jordan’s price-tag has trebled in just a few weeks as a Sevilla player with his new value around £39 million.
West Ham United must be kicking themselves.
According to ABC, The Hammers offered Jordan far more money than Sevilla as they looked to lure him to the English capital. But a lucrative contract still wasn’t enough to convince him to choose the London Stadium over the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
“I had several offers. I had half decided to go to the Premier League,” he explained. “The call of Seville changed everything.”
“I would have earned a lot more in the Premier Leaguebut I wanted to come to Sevilla. I knew I was going to be very happy here, for the moment I am and I hope I can continue like this.”
In the form of his life and with his transfer value rising by the week, West Ham United were snubbed by a player who has the world at his feet right now.
