Philippe Coutinho shone on his Champions League debut for Bayern Munich but is he finding his form at last after leaving Liverpool?

Phillipe Coutinho gave Bayern Munich fans plenty to look forward to on Wednesday night with a display full of class and quality in a 3-0 Champions League triumph over Red Star Belgrade.

One of the world’s greatest playmakers arrived in Munich desperate to rebuild his reputation after 18 testing months in the Barcelona goldfish bowl. Like James Rodriguez before him, Coutinho fell out of favour in Spain and Bayern took full advantage by agreeing a loan deal for a player who cost a staggering £146 million just a year-and-a-half earlier (Sky Sports).

And if Coutinho builds on a dazzling display against the Champions of Serbia, Bayern might have just found a player capable of taking them to the next level both at home and abroad.

No wonder Don Hutchison, an avid Bundesliga fanatic who knows Coutinho well from his formative years at Liverpool, was left in awe by a player who is just starting to look like his old self again.

With 97 Premier League points and a sixth European title under their belts, Liverpool didn’t exactly appear to be missing their departed talisman last season.

But even the most hard-nosed Liverpool fan must have felt a little nostalgic with Coutinho pulling the strings at the heart of Bayern Munich’s star studded midfield.
