Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur were on scouting missions last night.

The Champions League group stage got underway on Tuesday night, and Benfica got off to the worst possible start with a home defeat to RB Leipzig.

Timo Werner smashed Leipzig in front from Yussuf Poulsen’s lay-off, and then added a second from close range, tapping in Marcel Sabitzer’s pass.

Rafa Silva teed up Haris Seferovic to pull one back for Benfica, but the hosts couldn’t find an equaliser, falling to a 2-1 home defeat.

With Zenit and Lyon in their very difficult group too, this was a terrible start for Benfica – and the game was seemingly of interest to a number of English scouts.

Journalist Marcus Alves posted a photo on Twitter of all the clubs with scouting representation at the game, and the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leeds United, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Watford were all on the list.

Targets aren’t named, but Rafa Silva, Ruben Dias, Odisseas Vlachodimos, Ferro and Alejandro Grimaldo have attracted Premier League interest in the past, whilst they had two youngsters involved in Tomas Tavares and David Tavares.

Those two players may be cropping up on radars now, whilst on the Leipzig side, Ibrahima Konate, Yussuf Poulsen and Timo Werner could be in demand, as may Marcel Sabitzer and Emil Forsberg.

It’s somewhat surprising and fascinating though that Leeds sent a scout, and you would assume that most players involved would be beyond their reach in the Championship, but they seemingly had their eye on somebody at the Estadio da Luiz last night.
