Sunderland have been linked with a bizarre move for Sam Allardyce.

Sunderland are in action against Rotherham United tonight, with Jack Ross looking to pick up another victory after Saturday’s win over Accrington Stanley.

The Black Cats sit fifth in the League One table, one point off an automatic promotion spot and two points off first place, with Ross hoping to go one better than last season’s playoff final defeat.

Ross has been backed with another season despite that loss, but there has been a strange rumour emerging about Sam Allardyce.

The Sun claimed over the weekend that ex-Sunderland boss Allardyce is interested in a return to the Stadium of Light, more than three years since leaving to take the England job.

The report is a little convoluted, as it’s claimed that Ross will be given this season and then another season if he wins promotion, meaning any move for Allardyce would only happen in 2021.

It seems unlikely that Sunderland would be planning that far ahead, but with an American consortium trying to buy the club, Allardyce could yet be their man.

A former Sunderland defender and then a popular manager of the Black Cats, Allardyce could look to return to management with the club, but the reaction is very mixed so far.

Some Sunderland fans believe that Allardyce has unfinished business with the club and needs to be brought back to Wearside, but others think Allardyce is a mercenary who only wants a return because of the money on offer, and would prefer to stick with Ross for the long-term rather than go back to Allardyce.
