Sunderland have been linked with a bizarre move for Sam Allardyce.
Sunderland are in action against Rotherham United tonight, with Jack Ross looking to pick up another victory after Saturday’s win over Accrington Stanley.
The Black Cats sit fifth in the League One table, one point off an automatic promotion spot and two points off first place, with Ross hoping to go one better than last season’s playoff final defeat.
Ross has been backed with another season despite that loss, but there has been a strange rumour emerging about Sam Allardyce.
The Sun claimed over the weekend that ex-Sunderland boss Allardyce is interested in a return to the Stadium of Light, more than three years since leaving to take the England job.
The report is a little convoluted, as it’s claimed that Ross will be given this season and then another season if he wins promotion, meaning any move for Allardyce would only happen in 2021.
It seems unlikely that Sunderland would be planning that far ahead, but with an American consortium trying to buy the club, Allardyce could yet be their man.
A former Sunderland defender and then a popular manager of the Black Cats, Allardyce could look to return to management with the club, but the reaction is very mixed so far.
Some Sunderland fans believe that Allardyce has unfinished business with the club and needs to be brought back to Wearside, but others think Allardyce is a mercenary who only wants a return because of the money on offer, and would prefer to stick with Ross for the long-term rather than go back to Allardyce.
Not for me. Like the bloke but think Ross doing ok at mo and should be given chance. Our squad imo is better than it was last year which will hopefully allow Ross to settle on a team and play more attacking. We’re alot more street wise this year killing games by wasting time— Michael Urwin (@MichaelUrwin4) September 16, 2019

On Allardyce to #SAFC – building sustainably, developing youth, spending modestly is said to be the strategy…does Big Sam fit that mould? I’m not so sure.— Morgan Lowrie (@MorganLowrie) September 15, 2019
That said, he’d potentially be an excelllent appointment short term with 2 promotions in mind, but long term?
Apparently Big Sam is wanting to return to management, and we are in the running to hire him. He did a great job at the SoL, but we need to move on as a fanbase. Plus this information is coming from The Sun #dontbuythesun #SAFC— Daniel Jenks (@DanielJenks89) September 15, 2019
In jack we trust never that big Sam coming back if he does he’ll no doubt he wants to go after the end of the season jack Ross red and white army keep believing— Header Safc (@HeaderSafc) September 17, 2019
Big Sam can do one if he thinks he’d be welcomed back to this club….he’s a mercenary. He works with mercenaries that’s why he done so well when he was here. Stay away and keep away #SAFC #JackRossredandwhitearmy— Dan Kendal (@Dankendal93) September 15, 2019
