The Liverpool defender was linked to Real Madrid and Barcelona in the Spanish media this week.
Liverpool fans are feeling bullish about keeping hold of defender Virgil van Dijk despite speculation this week that a pair of European giants were keen on his services.
Spanish publication AS claimed on Sunday that the Anfield star is a big target for Barcelona and Real Madrid over the coming years, as they consider making long-term improvements to their defensive lines.
It’s something that was then picked up by multiple UK outlets, sparking a drive of speculation that resulted in splash headlines and tweets from broadcasters such as the BBC.
With the defender tied down to Liverpool until 2023 and apparently happy with his current surroundings, there is little reason for Reds supporters to be concerned about the player leaving.
Jurgen Klopp has built the finest side in Europe currently, and van Dijk is a well paid man, so there is not much the Spanish giants can offer the player beyond a bit of prestige and perhaps better weather!
Liverpool are unlikely to be in a rush to sell him either considering the transformation he has brought to the Anfield defence over the last 18 months.
Those are all reasons why supporters have mostly laughed off the claims, feeling that the media speculation is nothing more than baseless transfer gossip.
These fans took to Twitter this week to share their thoughts on it all…
There’s not a single chance this would happen though! The reasons we lost the likes of Suarez, Coutinho etc to them was because we wasn’t exactly competing for trophies every year! It’s so different now! We’re arguably the best team in world football with some of the best players— Jaedon Taylor (@jaedontaylor07) September 16, 2019
Silly tweet. LFC fans aren’t worried about any of the first team leaving. There’s no greater club or manager to play for at the moment. You don’t have to look passed Can and Coutinho for examples either if you needed one.— david_pinell (@david_pinell) September 16, 2019

If they want to pay that, they can help themselves in the summer after he’s helped us win the league.
They wouldn’t (couldn’t) find that cash to make Neymar happen so I’d suggest we have nothing to worry about.

If shown to be the case, Liverpool holds the two most valuable assets in a manager and player in the world they’ll never leave for either of those as well— Zain Mirza (@zain90425054) September 16, 2019
