Derby County, Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday all made bids to sign free agent Saul Shotton before the highly-rated defender agreed to join West Bromwich Albion on a two-year deal, according to the Mail.
One of the most promising young centre-backs in the Football League is set to arrive at the Hawthorns later this week.
Shotton has been without a club since crisis-ridden Bury were expelled from League One in late August but the 18-year-old certainly hasn’t been short of offers in the last few weeks.
The Mail claims that Preston, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday were all interested in offering the one-time Stoke City youngster the chance to prove himself at Championship level – though West Brom are expected to announce his signing later in the week.
The likes of Nathan Ferguson, Kyle Edwards and Grady Diangana have been key players for Slaven Bilic this season and the Croatian’s willingness to give youth a chance means Shotton should be confident of having a big role to play at West Brom going forward.
Shotton played just four games for Bury as they sealed promotion from League Two last season and it remains to be seen whether he can better that tally during his debut season at The Hawthorns.
