A guide for how to fix the recurring problems with Borderlands 3 crashing and stuttering on PC.

Borderlands 3 might be a witty and fun game with a ton of pop cultural references to the likes of Rick and Morty and Tommy Wiseau, but it’s also a mess on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and especially PC with a dozen crashing and stuttering performance issues.

While Gearbox are happy with the fact Borderlands 3 has been a major success on the Epic Games Store in-spite-of pre-launch boycotts, a lot of players are furious with the game’s performance on PC.

There’s been a never-ending array of complaints on Twitter and other social media forums about the game crashing and stuttering. You shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to be able to play a newly released AAA product, but you can still find fixes for the PC performance issues down below.

How to fix Borderlands 3 stuttering

Although this structure is backwards, we’ll first discuss how to fix the Borderlands 3 stuttering conundrum before moving onto the issues with it crashing.

As reported over on Reddit by a lot of disgruntled gamers, one of the biggest issues with the performance of Borderlands 3 on PC is it stuttering. This is said to be a major downside on PS4 and Xbox One as well, but the following solution is for PC only.

Coming from a user named Helemekoko, a temporary solution that has worked for a lot of gamers is decreasing the quality of the graphics.

In order to accomplish this, you’ll want to proceed to the Graphics settings and change the quality to Low. You can change the individual settings to whatever you want, but restarting the game afterwards should resolve the issue with the game stuttering when aiming.

The downside to this temporary solution is that it doesn’t work for all weapons. Users are still suffering from annoying stutters during combat and when not using weapons with iron sights.

But, although the temporary solution isn’t perfect, hopefully it stops the game from stuttering all the time when opening loot caches, accessing your inventory and aiming your guns.

How to fix Borderlands 3 crashing

Alongside the complaints about the game stuttering, fans have also lambasted Borderlands 3 for constantly crashing on PC. Again, the same is said to be happening with PS4 and Xbox One, but the following is for computers only.

If you cannot play more than five minutes without Borderlands 3 crashing, it may be because you are running the game in Windowed Borderless rather than Fullscreen.

Changing to fullscreen should eliminate the aforementioned problem, but it creates another one in which players have reportedly been subjected to a black screen. In order to fix this, you must change the game to Windowed Mode through pressing “Alt + Enter.”

Then you’ll want to head to the video settings to enable the proper resolution so you can enjoy the wonders of Borderlands 3 in Fullscreen (via Segment Next).

If the game is instead crashing during the stylish Intro, you’ll need to update your BIOS.

Provided the two above methods don’t eliminate the crashes, you will then need to turn off your third-party software (i.e. MSI Afterburner and GeForce Experience).

Again, gamers shouldn’t have to jump through a dozen hoops to be able to play a product they’ve spent $60 on, but hopefully the solutions provided should eliminate some of the performance issues.
