Ryan Bennett was left out of the squad as Wolverhampton Wanderers suffered a 5-2 Premier League defeat at home to Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

When you sign a player from Real Madrid, the temptation is to throw him immediately into the starting XI and expect performances worthy of the 13-time European champions.

But Jesus Vallejo could hardly have endured a more chastening Premier League debut in the Old Gold of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A defender who captained Spain to glory at the U21 European Championships in July was all at sea when Chelsea arrived in the Black Country. And, just to cap a miserable outing, Vallejo was left humiliated by a twisting, turning Mason Mount as the newly-capped England international wriggled away to score Chelsea’s fifth of the game in the final few seconds.

Just 90 minutes into his Premier League career, Wolves fans are already calling in their numbers for Vallejo to return to the bench and be replaced by a defender who moved to Molineux for just £2.5 million (Shropshire Star).

Ryan Bennett was left out of the matchday squad entirely against Chelsea and, while he is far from the most glamorous member of Wolves’ roster, he played a key role as Nuno’ Espirito Santo’s side won the Championship and finished seventh in the Premier League last season.

Wolves might still have lost with Bennett on the pitch. But surely a five-goal battering could have been prevented.
