Barry Bannan came through the ranks at Aston Villa and he is now proving his worth with Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish has praised Barry Bannan after he helped Sheffield Wednesday record a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Sunday afternoon.

Grealish stated that midfielder Bannan was ‘Man of the Match’ during the Championship clash, as ex-Birmingham City boss Garry Monk picked up three points in his first game in charge.

Monk wasn’t the only manager taking charge of his first game, with Huddersfield also appointing Danny Cowley as their new boss during the international break.

Nonetheless, Grealish, who came through the same academy as Bannan at Bodymoor Heath, sent this message about the ex-Villa man from his personal Instagram account.

That win has moved Wednesday into ninth place and they are four points behind current table-toppers Leeds United, who won their own Yorkshire derby against Barnsley on the same day.

In the game itself, Steven Fletcher headed Wednesday into the lead after 10 minutes, with Bannan providing Sam Winnall for his goal 18 minutes from time.

Nonetheless, Bannan will be hoping to follow the same road Grealish took Aston Villa down last season when they earned promotion via the Championship play-off final.

In March, Villa were down and out in their race for promotion, but Grealish returned from a three-month lay-off and guided the club to a 10-match winning run.

Bannan, himself has had his fair share of injury problems, so have his Wednesday teammates, but if they can stay fit then they’ll be hopeful of making those play-offs, at the very least.
