Southampton have reportedly made Yari Verschaeren a ‘priority’ as Ralph Hasenhuttl looks to bring firepower to St Mary’s.

Southampton will have to part with around £13.3 million if they want to sign Anderlecht starlet Yari Verschaeren during the January transfer window, according to Anderlecht Online.

At the age of 18, Verschaeren is already a key first-team player for one of the biggest clubs in the Jupiler League, not to mention a one-time Belgium international.

The Antwerp-born teenager has shot to fame since the turn of the year, sending social media into meltdown with a glorious individual goal in the U21 European Championships against hosts Italy earlier in the summer.

Yannick Bolasie, the Everton winger who spent the second half of 2018/19 on loan at Anderlecht, was blown away by the jinking winger, telling Voetbal 24 that he thought Verschaeren must have some familial connection with Real Madrid superstar Eden Hazard.

Since then, reports have emerged this week claiming that Southampton could look to sign another of the Jupiler League’s most exciting wingers, having snapped up Moussa Djenepo from Standard Liege in the recent transfer window.

But it remains to be seen whether they are willing to pay the £13.3 million Anderlecht want with The Saints understood to have made Verschaeren a ‘priority’ ahead of the winter months.

Speaking to ITV after sealing a deal for Djenepo in June, Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl made it clear what type of player he wants at St Mary’s.

“He combines his quality with a good mentality and he is the right profile of player that we want to sign – still in the early part of his career, already with a lot of talent, but also with a great amount of potential that I believe we can help him to fulfil.”

This also describes Verschaeren to a tee.
