A problem with Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack's knee has flared up as a direct result of over training with the Scotland national team, manager Steven Gerrard has claimed.

The Ibrox boss was left annoyed by the way in which his star was treated by Steve Clarke and Scotland coaches during the international break.

As quoted by The Daily Record, he said: "Unfortunately he was asked to do an 11k session two days after an Old Firm (derby), which made his knee flare up. So we have had to manage him, he has had to have a couple of procedures since.

"He did a light session with the physio today (Thursday) and we are hoping to get him into training tomorrow.

"I think it's just careless. You should never, ever do 11k two days after playing 90 minutes. That's the education I've had."

With big matches on the horizon, it's a far from ideal situation for Rangers or Jack.

The midfielder would likely be a crucial component of Gerrard's side for upcoming UEFA Europa League games.

Gerrard reckons that SFA fitness coaches are fully aware of the ongoing issues Jack has with his knee, so while there are likely two sides to this story, it's not a great look for the international set-up.

Players' fitness should be the absolute top priority, not just for their benefit, but because of what can be at stake for club sides.

It's fair to say that Rangers fans are similarly displeased with the situation, with some taking to Twitter on Thursday to share their thoughts on it all...
