Jim Goodwin's comments suggest Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has a point with his SFA gripe

The Ibrox boss was left unhappy with the way Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack was treated during the recent international break.

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin has suggested Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack trained double the recommended amount while on international duty, speaking on BBC Sportsound.

The former defender's comments come after the Ibrox side raised concerns about what happened during a training session in the wake of a derby match against Celtic.

Steven Gerrard was not a happy man in his press conference earlier on Thursday, upset that a Jack knee issue that needs constantly managed has flared up as a result of a too intense spell working under Steve Clarke.

As quoted by The Daily Record, the Rangers manager said: "I think it's just careless. You should never, ever do 11k two days after playing 90 minutes. That's the education I've had.

"Ryan's got a knee issue that he manages and he has done for a long time.

"The SFA are aware of that, their fitness coach is aware of that. I think everyone in Scotland watched the Old Firm and saw Ryan play 90 minutes. And then 48 hours afterwards, he did a double session."

Obviously Gerrard is giving one side of the story, but he clearly feels that his player has not been treated in the right manner.

Goodwin was obviously more diplomatic with his comments, but seemed to suggest what the Ibrox man said is accurate in terms of what's expected after an energy sapping match.

Speaking on the Thursday night edition of BBC Sportsound, the Buddies boss said: "That is slightly unusual - from our point of view then normally 48 hours after a game it'll be a lighter session and you will probably do between 5K and 7K.

"All the top clubs now have their GPS monitors which is a fantastic tool and allows us to monitor the load of all the players.

"If that's true about Ryan Jack then probably sports science would tell you that's not advisable but I obviously can't talk too much about it."

With Jack now facing the prospect of missing a number of matches, it's not a good situation for Rangers to be in.

Fans will now question his continuing role in the Scotland set-up. Supporters of clubs are never the most willing to see their players head off on international duty in the midst of crucial matches.

Rangers will be hoping the midfielder is back fit again as soon as possible.

With big matches on the horizon both in the Scottish Premiership and UEFA Europa League, they'll need him.
