Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk won the European Cup last season, but he is yet to taste Premier League title glory.

Neutral supporters on Twitter were left stunned when Vincent Kompany suggested that Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk is the best defender in Premier League history.

Centre-back Kompany, who won four Premier League titles during his time with Manchester City, left the Etihad Stadium in the summer to make a switch back to his homeland of Belgium.

On Wednesday night, he was given a testimonial by the Manchester club – the game ended up finishing 2-2, with a host of ex-Premier League stars involved.

Nonetheless, prior to that clash, he made a quite jaw-dropping claim about Van Dijk and where he ranks amongst the best defenders in Premier League history, as quoted by The Mirror.

It is fair to say that Kompany's suggestion that Van Dijk is better than the likes of Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Tony Adams, has left many fans stunned.

Whilst Van Dijk is the best defender in the world, at this moment in time, many fans believe he simply hasn't been doing it for long enough for him to warrant that status.

Plus, some pointed towards the fact that Van Dijk has not won a Premier League title and they feel you have to win that as a minimum in order to get talked about.

The Dutchman will point towards his European cup, but then the likes of Ferdinand, Vidic and Terry have also lifted that same crown.
