Sunderland landed a new striker this summer as they brought Marc McNulty to the club, landing him on loan from Reading.
McNulty has joined Will Grigg, Charlie Wyke and Benjamin Kimpioka in the Sunderland striker ranks, but Jack Ross and co looked at another hitman too.
Burnley released Zimbabwean striker Tinashe Chakwana at the end of last season, and it looked like he would be heading to the Stadium of Light.
The Herald in Zimbabwe reported that Chakwana had signed for Sunderland, penning a deal following his Premier League exit – but then the situation turned a little strange.
Sunderland didn't confirm such a deal, and Black Cats Under-23 boss Elliott Dickman told the Sunderland Echo that a move wouldn't be pursued for Chakwana after seeing him on trial.
Chakwana had been lined up for as a developmental prospect, but he went from an alleged done and dusted deal to being back on the free agent market in rapid time.
Some Sunderland fans may wonder where Chakwana is now, but the answer is that he remains a free agent and is still looking for his new club after leaving Burnley.
It seems unlikely that Sunderland will go back in for Chakwana despite his free agent status, and will have to wait and see what happens to the young striker, who was seemingly Sunderland-bound just a couple of months ago.
