Everton fans impressed by Cenk Tosun's Turkey display

Cenk Tosun hasn't played a second in the Premier League this season but the Toffees' forgotten man has just sent a message to Marco Silva.

Cenk Tosun looked every inch like a £27 million striker on Tuesday night. Unfortunately for Everton, his most impressive display since that January 2018 move to Goodison Park came during the international break.

Tosun was undoubtedly the star of the show as Turkey battered Moldova 4-0 away from home in Euro 2020 qualifying. A player whose confidence appears to have hit rock bottom on Merseyside looked a man reborn, opening the scoring with a glorious piece of skill reminiscent of that Mesut Ozil wonder-goal against Ludogorets in the Champions League.

The second was a simple tap in after the ball rebounded off the bar, but this is precisely the kind of predatory poaching that Everton paid all the money for.

With just four goals in 29 games for The Toffees last season, the critics have been quick to write off Tosun as the very definition of a big-money flop. But context is required. The former Besiktas talisman was often dragged off the bench for little more than brief cameos during Marco Silva’s debut season at Goodison Park, and Everton’s chronic lack of creativity meant he was frequently isolated in attack.

But with Alex Iwobi and Moise Kean adding speed and cutting edge in the final third, and with the transfer window shut until the New Year, surely Tosun deserves another chance.

After all, he's played just 16 minutes this season and scored once. Dominic Calvert-Lewin? No goals in 261 minutes.
