After an absence of six years, Top Boy is set to return on Netflix but why did Channel 4 cancel the show in the first place?

As well as creating its own new shows from scratch, Netflix is also well known for buying up the rights to shows on terrestrial television and turning them into its own series.

Just look at the success Netflix has had since it took Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror off Channel 4's hands.

Well, another show to undergo the same fate is Top Boy which was cancelled by Channel 4 after its second season aired in 2013 but is set to undergo a revival under the streaming giants in 2019.

What's Top Boy about?

The first two seasons of Top Boy, which have been renamed Top Boy: Summerhouse on Netflix, tell the story of Ra'Nell as he tries to survive in one of the worst crime-ridden areas of London.

He is joined by a pair of drug dealers, Dushane and Sully, who are set to take the lead in season 3, who are forced to make a number of incredibly tough decisions in order to survive in the perilous industry.

Why was Top Boy cancelled on Channel 4?

Despite a sizeable following and viewing figures on the top-side of a million for every episode of its original run, Top Boy was cut short by Channel 4 after just two seasons.

The official reason for the cancellation was never revealed, all we do know is that Channel 4 simply refused to renew the show.

Speaking to The Independent, Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett said: "It felt like a slap in the face to the community it was representing. No answer came back to that, I didn’t understand it."

Following its Channel 4 cancellation, Top Boy looked dead and buried until 2017 when Netflix and Drake, of all people, began to take interest in reviving the show.

When's season 3 heading to Netflix?

Fast-forward to September 2019 and the now Drake-produced Top Boy is set to return to our screens over on Netflix.

The third season of the show is set to drop on Friday, September 13th and fans of the original series are no doubt going to be thrilled that it's finally got a third series after a six-year wait.
