Is the technical side of the Rangers star's game under-rated?
Morelos scored 30 goals in all competitions for the Gers last season and solidified his status as one of the best players in the country.
Always a tough customer for opposition defenders to play against, Shaughnessy has given his perspective on what makes him such an effective forward.
He played for St Johnstone last season, against whom the Colombian netted three goals.
Now at Southend United, the defender had a lot of good things to say about the Rangers star, even believing one aspect of his game is 'under-rated'.
As quoted by The Daily Record, he said: "Morelos was such an awkward customer. It was always hard against Rangers, whoever played up front, but against Morelos last year I knew I had to be at the top of my game to stop him.
"In the game at McDiarmid Park we did really well against him but then he scored two late goals for Rangers to win 2-1.
"He got them because of his movement in the box. We lost him for a second and he scored – that’s what Morelos can do to you. He punishes you and that’s what all good strikers do. And technically Morelos is under-rated. His finishing is usually very good.
"We lost 5-1 to Rangers at Ibrox last season and he was excellent that day. After that, I would never question his technical ability."
Can Morelos reach a higher level at Rangers?
The Ibrox star has already started this season in similarly good form to the displays Shaughnessy mentions, netting ten goals and assisting three times in just 12 appearances.
Still though there's a sense he's not quite hitting his peak and it'll be interesting to see whether he can improve even further over the course of this season.
One of the big knocks against the player has been his inability to influence derby matches against Celtic with goals. Since arriving in 2017, he's failed to net against the Hoops.
Steven Gerrard even left him out of the recent 2-0 defeat at Ibrox, perhaps a sign that even his manager questions his ability in the big matches.
With the Europa League group stage on the horizon though, he has another opportunity to impress on the continental scene. He's already scored eight goals in qualifying this season and last term bagged two in the group stages.
If he can prove himself against Feyenoord, Young Boys and Porto then his reputation will hit new heights.
