Is Joaquin Phoenix vegan? Which other DC heroes support the cause?

Joaquin Phoenix receives the TIFF Tribute Actor Award during the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival TIFF Tribute Gala at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel on September 09, 2019 in...

His DC outing is sure to be one of 2019's most celebrated films.

Woah, DC have seriously come back strong!

One thing film fans are pretty much all in agreement with is the fact that the MCU reigns supreme. Their track record is glowing, and in recent memory, they've given us the likes of Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home

With a huge slate of surefire hits on the way, perhaps they can do no wrong. On the other hand, audiences' relationship with DC movies is far more problematic. Everybody loved Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, but after that their comic book movies fell into decline. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was largely considered a colossal disappointment, and Justice League even more so. Things didn't look good, but we had 2017's Wonder Woman which gave us hope.

Fortunately, it picked up with the likes of Aquaman and Shazam! At the moment it looks like DC films are right on track, the with Todd Phillips' Joker stunning critics. Although Joaquin Phoenix is playing the titular villain, is he a hero in the kitchen?

Is Joaquin Phoenix vegan?

Yep, you better believe it!

Batman's greatest foe has been expertly portrayed by the likes of Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger; it looks like Joaquin is set to deliver his own unique but similarly captivating take.

The 44-year-old actor is well known for playing Johnny Cash in the biopic Walk the Line but has amazed across You Were Never Really Here, The Master, Signs, Inherent Vice and more. With his DC role drawing mass attention, many are asking about his personal life.

He has been very vocal in his support of the vegan lifestyle and cause. As highlighted by CTV News just recently, Joaquin surprised the Toronto public when he swung by to participate in a public display courtesy of Colorado-based group Be Fair Be Vegan. This is just one of the very many occasions he's supported vegan demonstrations.

How long has he been vegan?

Over the years he's collaborated with many vegan organisations, and it appears he's been a big believer for a very long time now, considering he narrated the shocking and eye-opening 2005 documentary Earthlings, which tackles the abuse of animals in the food industry and beyond - a difficult and confrontational watch.

As you'd expect, he's a proud member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). Along with his work with the far-spanning organisation, he also narrated another documentary - along with the likes of Jessica Chastain and many more - called Unity. It's actually a sequel to the previously mentioned Earthlings

Over the years, we've seen so many more celebrities going vegan and getting involved with groups who aim to target industries considered exploitative. We know Joaquin is, but are any other DC actors also vegan?

Which DC heroes are too?

There are lots of celebs who are vegan who aren't so vocal, but Joaquin is particularly and admirably expressive in his beliefs.

Things very well could have changed, but back when Gal Gadot was training for the role of Wonder Woman there was an emphasis placed on her diet, as superhero roles often require their stars to be in top physical shape to nail the role. She wasn't vegan then and there hasn't been any reason to believe otherwise since.

It's pretty much the same with Jason Momoa, whose diet was the talk of the town when he was preparing for the role of Aquaman in James Wan's 2018 blockbuster. Along with vegetables, cutting out junk food and beyond, the star ate a great deal of meat to help sculpt the physique many marvelled over in the film.

Although he's no longer our Batman, Ben Affleck donned the cape on a handful of occasions. It doesn't look like he's vegan, but this one's a little complicated. As highlighted by Live Kindly, there are rumours that the 47-year-old actor has hired a personal chef to help him eat vegan. So, maybe Batman and Joker will share common ground after all - just kidding!

In other news, is Jack Nicholson in Doctor Sleep?
