Aston Villa fans have been left shocked by Mick McCarthy’s suggestion that Conor Hourihane will start at left-back this evening for the Republic of Ireland.

Villa midfielder Hourihane is set to start for his country against Bulgaria this evening, but not in his usual position.

As reported by The 42 Ireland, McCarthy wants to try the Villa man out as a full-back in the friendly match.

“It would be amazing if he played really well tomorrow. If he doesn’t, nothing ventured, nothing gained,” McCarthy said.

The idea has received mixed reviews by Villa fans, who have differing opinions on whether it could work.

Some claret and blues supporters fear that Hourihane could badly struggle out of position, but others feel that it could be a stroke of genius.

If Hourihane does prove he can play at left-back it would be a boost for Villa, as it would offer them more cover at left-back.

Hourihane has struggled for game time at Villa Park this term, with Douglas Luiz taking his spot in midfield.

Villa are next in action at the weekend when they take on West Ham United.
