Aston Villa and Leeds United both reached the Championship play-offs last season.
Aston Villa supporters on Twitter have offered their thoughts after reports suggested that Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set to sign a new contract with the club.
The Telegraph claims that Phillips has agreed to a new long-term deal with the Championship side after Premier League side Aston Villa expressed interest in his services during the summer transfer window.
But it seems as though Leeds have won that fight and Phillips is set to stay at Elland Road where he will be hoping to help his boyhood club earn promotion to the Premier League.
Some Villa fans have wished Phillips good luck and drawn comparisons with Jack Grealish, who was attracting interest last summer before he stayed on, penned a new deal and helped Villa earn promotion.
Nonetheless, amid all that interest in Phillips, Villa ended up securing the signatures of Marvelous Nakamba and Douglas Luiz – the latter has started Villa’s past three Premier League games.
Phillips’ long-term future is now secured, but it remains to be seen what the club will do with one of their star men if they don’t get over that dotted line next summer.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side are currently sitting third in the Championship table, and despite a defeat to table-toppers Swansea City last time out, they have started off the campaign in a strong fashion.
As expected, Phillips has been in great form and he will be hoping his team can put the troubles of last season behind them and potentially join Villa in the Premier League next term.
Here is a selection of Villa fans reacting to Phillips reported deal:

Good luck to him. Our @JackGrealish1 did the same and it paid off— walshcat (@walshcat1) September 8, 2019
It’ll likely have a buy out clause should we not get promoted…wouldn’t get to carried away unfortunately.— huncho (@DraftHitta) September 8, 2019
Good for him – he is a shoe-in for an England place in the future – I am sorry Villa missed out on him but Leeds knew his value to them.— Troels Lund (@Troels71) September 8, 2019
Top player. Shame we never signed him— Brian Brogden (@you_big_bully) September 8, 2019
He’s not that marvelous— Kantes bigger brother (@nakambaavi) September 8, 2019
