Liverpool’s Joe Gomez was an unused substitute during England’s win against Bulgaria on Saturday.
Darren Bent wants Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to start for England ahead of their Euro 2020 qualifier against Kosovo on Tuesday night.
Gareth Southgate’s side recorded a 4-0 win against Bulgaria on Saturday afternoon, with Harry Maguire and Michael Keane starting at the heart of England’s defence.
It was a pretty comfortable win for England, who only looked shaky where their opponents were hitting them on the break, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
Speaking to GameDay Verdict on TalkSport (07/09/2019 at 9:15 pm), Bent shared his thoughts on Gomez’s talents and how he was unlucky because of recent injuries.
“It depends what shape he [Southgate] goes with,” Bent told TalkSport. “For me, if you look at the defenders, you’d probably have Maguire and Gomez [for Kosovo] because I really like Gomez, he’s a real top-quality defender. Before he had that injury he was a big powerhouse and a big powerful presence.
“It doesn’t surprise me that eventually, it’ll be him and Van Dijk, week in and week out at Liverpool. He’s that good.”
More than likely, Southgate will stick with the defensive duo that started against Bulgaria, but it remains to be seen whether he changes other areas of his team.
At fullback, Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose started, but he has some very strong viable back-up options in Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Chilwell.
But at club level, Gomez is yet to play regularly at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, with Virgil van Dijk being partnered by Joel Matip.
