The Reds midfielder was given licence to roam higher up the pitch than at Anfield – to devastating effect for the Dutch.
A number of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to praise Georginio Wijnaldum for his impressive display for the Netherlands in the Euro 2020 qualifying win over Germany in Hamburg on Friday night.
The Reds midfielder grabbed an assist and a goal as the Oranje ran out 4-2 winners over the four-time world champions and put themselves back into contention for top spot in Group C, currently held by Northern Ireland.
Serge Gnabry had given Germany an early lead before Frenkie de Jong and Jonathan Tah’s own goal put the Dutch ahead and, even though Toni Kroos scored a penalty following a controversial decision, Wijnaldum dinked a great pass across for Donyell Malen to fire home for the lead.
With more licence to push forward than normally granted at Liverpool thanks to Marten de Roon and Frenkie de Jong alongside him in midfield, the Anfield ace sealed the win in added time after triggering a counter-attack which culminated in a 65-yard run up the pitch and a tap-in for the visitors’ fourth.
Here is what some Liverpool fans wrote on social media about the £45million-valued ace (Transfermarkt):
Gini is so underrated would really like to see him unleashed in a midfield of Fabinho-Keita and Gini— Rajoun Buddo (@Jon_Van_Dijk) 7 September 2019
Maybe Gini should be played more offensively later— ちゅープリ (@TsuyoOtsuyu) 7 September 2019
That sprint from gini— vince (@vince84427510) 7 September 2019
If let Gini out of the lamp, he can create havoc. Just ask Bacelona!— ålfred ćhua (@alfchua) 7 September 2019
We tried to warn you. Gini Wijnaldum let loose from the shackles of jurgen klopp will tear the Footballing world apart. Wijnaldum under a decent coach should be illegal— Stephen (@SkipperStevieG) 7 September 2019
Wijnaldum’s strong performance with @oranjevrouwen is another strong case to be played as an attacking midfielder in Klopp’s Liverpool!— Sola Aiyepeku (@solaiyeps) 6 September 2019
His balancing act in @LFC midfield might however make that a rarity.
Watched Holland against Germany last night, Wijnaldum give the man some respect. Fantastic footballer, world class! #lfc— Alex (@Kott3LFC) 7 September 2019
Commented on a status some time last year on Facebook saying Gini Wijnaldum was one of the most underrated player in the premier league, for some clown to argue my point. He obviously knows nothing about football #LFC— Lewis Elson (@ElsonLewis90) 7 September 2019
Gini Wijnaldum is criminally underrated. Man produces on the big stage when club or country needs him. Should be in the FifPro XI ahead of several frauds. Hth.— Redista (@RedistaLFC) 7 September 2019
Following their first victory over Die Mannschaft on German soil since 2002, the Netherlands are now three points behind the second-placed Germans with a game in hand.
