Jason Manford and Catherine Tyldesley are set to star in the new sitcom Scarborough but was the series actually filmed there?
The BBC seems to be in the habit of producing regional sitcoms of late, with Hold the Sunset’s second series hitting our screens in recent weeks and new addition Scarborough set to follow suit on September 6th.
It goes without saying that the new comedy is gaining lots of attention, not only from the people of Scarborough but also fans of the ITV series Benidorm. Why? Because Scarborough is written and directed by Benidorm’s own Darren Litten.
Obviously, with a series that’s named after a well-known town such as North Yorkshire’s Scarborough, you’d expect the lion’s share of filming to have taken place there. However, while that is partly the case, some of the filming for Scarborough took place in a far more unexpected location.
What is Scarborough about?
Scarborough primarily tells the story of Mike and Karen. Both in their late 30s, the pair are giving their relationship another go after a break of five years after Mike’s ambitions of becoming an entertainer got in the way of their romance.
The series follows Mike, Karen and their friends as they meet up in the pub every Friday night for a catchup and a spot of karaoke.
Taking on the lead roles in Scarborough are comedian Jason Manford and Catherine Tyldesley. Joining them throughout the series are Open All Hours’ Stephanie Cole and Maggie Ollerenshaw as well as Steve Edge, Claire Sweeney and Harriet Webb.
What Scarborough locations were used during filming?
Obviously, being a series set in the seaside town of Scarborough, a lot of the series was filmed in the North Yorkshire town.
Specifically the majority of the outdoor scenes as well as a few notable locations across the town.
Filming took place between April and May of 2019 and locations such as Luna Park and Preasholm Park were used among others.
Scarborough’s Newcastle Packet Inn, located on the town’s seafront, was used as the location for the show’s pub which has been renamed in the series as The Good Ship.
Where is this mystery filming location?
Despite the obvious connection to Scarborough, a large chunk of filming was not undertaken in the town.
In fact, the majority of the show’s indoor scenes were actually filmed in studios in Manchester and the show’s hairdressing salon was, in fact, filmed in Stockport, a far cry from the popular seaside town of Scarborough.
Hopefully though, the blend of Manchester studios and Scarborough landmarks can convince audience members that all of the series does indeed take place in the North Yorkshire town.
The first episode of Scarborough is set to air at 9:30pm on Friday, September 6th on BBC One and the series, which is due to run for six episodes, is slated to finish on October 11th.
