Tottenham Hotspur’s Christian Eriksen scored twice as Denmark battered Gibraltar in Euro 2020 qualifying.
Jon Dahl Tomasson has paid tribute to Christian Eriksen after the Tottenham Hotspur talisman played a starring role as Denmark thrashed Gibraltar 6-0 away from home in Euro 2020 qualifying on Thursday night, while speaking to Jyllands Posten.
It has been a difficult start to the club season for Eriksen, who has been left on the bench more than once by Mauricio Pochettino after refusing to extend a contract which is due to expire a year from now.
But the long-term Real Madrid target looked free of worry and full of confidence in Gibraltar, putting in yet another stand-out performance for his country.
He scored two penalties either side of half-time and set up Robert Skov’s goal with a glorious cross. No wonder Tomasson, the legendary striker who is now Denmark’s assistant coach, took time to praise the former Ajax star after a win which keeps the battle alive at the top of Group D.
“Eriksen is eminent for us. He is skilled and a top class player,” said the former AC Milan and Newcastle United forward.
“It was a professional job that they performed super well. We scored six goals and it was great. It was good work.”
Eriksen has now scored 29 goals for his country in 90 caps, putting him one short of Niklas Bendtner in eighth of the all-time scoring charts.
And after a much improved performance in the North London derby draw with Arsenal before the international break, Pochettino will be hoping that Erisken can get his head down and rediscover his golden touch with the transfer window shut.
