Russell Crowe is unrecognisable as Roger Ailes in The Loudest Voice

When you think of Hollywood a-lister Russell Crowe, you’re instantly drawn to the image of him as a Roman gladiator screaming out to an amphitheatre full of people “are you not entertained?!”

However, Russell Crowe’s latest role is going to change your opinion on that as the 55-year-old actor has undergone a startling transformation.

The Loudest Voice, which is set to make its debut on Sky Atlantic on September 5th, sees Crowe take on the role of Fox News big-wig Roger Ailes and the work in the makeup department to completely change Russell’s appearance really is something to behold.

What is The Loudest Voice about?

The Loudest Voice, which is based on the Gabriel Sherman book The Loudest Voice in the Room, tells the story of the late Roger Ailes and his role in building Fox News into the huge multi-national news organisation that it is today before his death in 2017.

Roger Ailes, who was facing sexual assault allegations before his death, was a driving force in US conservatism and the series details events over the past decade as well as flashing back to key points in Ailes’ life such as 9/11, the 2008 and 2016 US elections.

After hitting screens in the US back in June, UK viewers will get the chance to watch The Loudest Voice when it airs on Sky Atlantic on Thursday, September 5th, 2019 at 9pm.

Russell Crowe’s incredible transformation

To take on the role of Roger Ailes, Russell Crowe had to undergo a huge transformation to achieve the desired look and it’s safe to say that it took a lot more than just makeup to get the appearance just right.

Not only is Crowe sporting a new hairdo, but the actor has clearly donned a bodysuit to achieve the desired physique of Roger Ailes.

The new look for Crowe is totally different to anything we’ve before for the actor and he’s totally unrecognisable in the role.

Other actors who’ve gone through similar transformations

While Russell Crowe’s transformation in The Loudest Voice is clearly a dramatic and unexpected one, he’s certainly not the only actor to have undergone a similar appearance change.

Christian Bale in Vice

Christian Bale is renowned for his dramatic and surely harmful weight changes for roles such as The Machinist and Vice.

As well as gaining over 40lbs, Bale also donned a fat suit and the transformation, just like Crowe’s, was startling as he took on the role of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Gary Oldman in Darkest Hour

It’s well known the Winston Churchill wasn’t the thinnest of men. It’s unsurprising therefore that to fully embrace the role of the great politician, Gary Oldman underwent a dramatic appearance change for his Oscar-winning role.

Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder

While it’s far from his most iconic of roles, Tom Cruise’s appearance in Tropic Thunder as short-tempered and foul-mouthed movie producer Les Grossman is certainly a memorable site.

John Travolta in Hairspray

Despite Grease and Pulp Fiction springing to mind at the mention of John Travolta, you can’t help but think of his role in the musical Hairspray where Travolta takes on the role of main character Tracy Turnblad’s mother, Edna.

Chris Hemsworth in Avengers: Endgame

And finally, the most recent and dramatic appearance change that we’ve seen in the world of film and TV is that of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor in Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame. Hemsworth’s appearance as ‘Fat Thor’ is certainly a far cry from the mass of muscle we’re used to seeing in the MCU.
