Neil Lennon’s Celtic have laid down their marker against their Old Firm rivals.
Barry Ferguson has claimed that Neil Lennon’s comments aimed at Celtc’s critics after their Old Firm win proves that what they were saying ‘hit a nerve’ with the Bhoys manager.
Prior to the Old Firm clash, certain parts of the media were making Rangers favourites and even tipping Steven Gerrard’s side to win, but after Celtic won at Ibrox, Lennon hit back at those who didn’t show his team enough respect, as quoted by The Daily Record.
Many were questioning Celtic’s defence leading up to the game, but on the day, they more than proved their worth as Rangers hardly laid a glove on their neighbours.
Speaking to PLZ Soccer’s YouTube account, Ferguson shared what he thought about Lennon’s feisty comments after Celtic had won the first Old Firm of the season.
“It’s clear that it hit a nerve with what some people were saying,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer. “It’s clear he used that. He’s been into that in the training ground and said to these players, ‘Listen, people are writing us off’.
“Celtic, for me, are still favourites for the title. He’s obviously spent a little money. £7 million on Jullien. £3 million on Bolingoli, who had [previously] struggled. But it was always going to take time for these guys to settle in and the perfect example was that he put a lot of trust in these players. And they come up trumps.
“It’s still early [to say that Rangers have a slim chance of winning]. I did say it will come down to these Old Firm games. Now Celtic have won the first one and deservedly so, in my eyes. Now Rangers need to go to Celtic Park, and I know myself it’s a difficult place to go and play a game of football, they’ll need to get something from that game.”
Celtic now go into the international break sitting top of the Scottish Premiership table and with a 100% start to the season.
It has put them in the driving seat to really showcase what they are about, with the next Old Firm game taking place just before the winter break.
But before that, a big September is coming up for Lennon and his Celtic players because along with Premiership matches they also have the Europa League to contend with now.
