Posh have been looking for a midfielder for much of the summer, and went to Scotland to search for targets, with Rangers man Docherty now sounding like the player that they were after.
MacAnthony has suggested that Posh had agreed a deal for a midfielder who impressed on loan in League One last term, and Rangers’ Docherty would fit the bill.
“We agreed a deal for a player from Scotland, for a player who plays in the midfield area, who was on loan in League One and did very well last year,” MacAnthony said.
“We agreed a deal to loan that player with an obligation to buy him for £750,000 before the end of the season.
“We were very confident on that, but the player wanted to stay and fight for his place. So gutted, it looked very promising on Friday, everything was agreed, and the player was pretty much there but then changed his mind.”
Docherty was loaned out by Rangers last term to Shrewsbury Town in League One, where he caught the eye.
The 22-year-old looked superb at Shrewsbury, but since he has returned to Rangers he has struggled to nail down a first-team place.
Steven Gerrard utilised Docherty in Europa League qualifying early on in the season, but he has only featured in Rangers’ match day squad for a league game once this term.
If the player in question was Docherty, it remains to be seen whether sticking with Rangers will prove to be a wise decision.
The youngster has plenty of competition for a place a Rangers, but he has stuck around at Ibrox, and will hope to catch the eye of Gerrard in training over the coming months.
