Lee Bowyer is staying at Charlton Athletic despite interest from Championship rivals Huddersfield Town but can they lure Cowley from League One Imps?

Huddersfield Town have turned their attention to Lincoln City coach Danny Cowley after Lee Bowyer made it clear that he had no intention of walking away from Charlton Athletic, as reported by the Mirror (3 September, page 50).

Almost three weeks after Jan Siewert was handed his P45, The Terriers appear to be no closer to appointing a replacement for the unpopular German at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Reports claimed that Huddersfield had made Bowyer their number one target after the former Leeds and West Ham midfielder took Charlton back to the Championship on a minimal budget while getting the best out of talented youngsters such as Joe Aribo and current Terriers striker Karlan Grant.

“I’m really happy with the way things are going. I’m going to be staying here,” Bowyer told Sky Sports, pretty much ending any hopes Huddersfield had of luring him to Yorkshire.

Fortunately, the Championship strugglers have an alternative lined up – the much-admired Cowley.

Like Bowyer, Cowley has thrived in the lower leagues, taking Lincoln from non-league to the third tier via successive promotions, not to mention a famous run to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup in 2018.

The London-born coach was pretty much an unknown when he took over at Sincil Bank at the age of just 37 but, three years later, The Imps are second in League One with genuine ambitions of a third promotion in a row.

With Lincoln’s journey ongoing, Huddersfield face a difficult task convincing him to leave Sincil Bank behind.
