Edwards had been on Tottenham Hotspur’s books since the age of six.

North London may not have seen the last of Marcus Edwards, after the Tottenham Hotspur winger completed a permanent move to Vitória de Guimarães on Monday.

Tottenham have allowed the highly-rated youngster to join the Portuguese side for an as-yet-unspecified amount, ending his near-15-year stay at the club.

Edwards has signed a contract until 2023 with Guimarães – containing a €15 million (£13.6m) buyout clause which perhaps underlines the potential seen in the 20-year-old.

And some of that could be on show when Vitória return to Tottenham’s neck of the woods in late October, to play Arsenal in the Europa League.

Edwards has never before faced Tottenham’s arch-rivals in a competitive senior fixture, or any current Premier League club for that matter, although he did come up against the reasonably-statured PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord (but not Ajax) during a temporary spell at Excelsior Rotterdam last season.

Given his impact there (six direct goal contributions in 28 appearances), he should not be fazed by a trip to the Emirates, where a below-full-strength Arsenal side may well await.

And grabbing a goal (or, better yet, a result) would give Tottenham one of the best possible goodbye presents.
