Glasgow Rangers reportedly attempted to bring Phil Foden to Ibrox this summer, but their offer was rejected.

According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (1/9; page 73), Rangers were one of the teams who failed with a loan bid for Manchester City sensation Phil Foden this summer with Pep Guardiola determined to keep the teenager.
Steven Gerrard may well go into the final hours of the transfer window very content with the business that the Gers have done this summer. It has helped take the club into the group-stages of the Europa League and they go into the first Old Firm meeting of the campaign with many backing the Light Blues to end their wait for the Scottish Premiership title this year.
But, despite all their good moves, it appears that Rangers still had their eye on what would have arguably been the most exciting move of the summer as the Sunday Mirror (1/9; page 73) reports that Gerrard wanted to bring Foden to Ibrox for the season.
The Premier League champions – who also received a bid from Roma for the 19-year-old – rejected the offer with Foden on the cusp of their first-team squad.

Foden – who signed a new long-term deal worth £30,000-a-week in December (via Independent) – has only played 10 minutes in the league this term, but it is no secret that he is one of the most exciting young players anywhere in Europe and it looks to be a matter of time before he is playing regularly for the Cityzens.
It would have been a game-changing deal for Rangers had they been able to sign the youngster on loan. They have a lot of quality in the middle of the park, but Foden has the potential to reach a completely different level.

It will be interesting to see whether Foden’s situation is one that Gerrard continues to monitor. Guardiola may not want to lose Foden this summer, but perhaps he may rethink his plans for the youngster if he continues to struggle for game-time in the coming months.
Rangers and Roma will surely have to expect more competition if they return with a fresh move for Foden in January, especially if he is available. But if the door is open for a temporary move away from the Etihad Stadium, then Rangers should definitely make sure that they are in the queue as he could be an outstanding addition.
