If you’re looking for something new to watch, look no further.

Murder, mythical creatures and Orlando Bloom…

Intrigued? So are we. As more and more TV series emerge to fight for our affections, there has never been a more important time to stand out from the crowd. Game of Thrones pretty much had the gritty fantasy market cornered, but since its conclusion – its very, very divisive conclusion, we might add – fans have been looking for something similarly quirky.

Netflix has been killing it with their content this year, wrapping up Orange Is the New Black, continuing Mindhunter and offering the most celebrated season of Stranger Things yet. However, Amazon is also striving to serve up some of the year’s most exciting shows.

The highly anticipated TV series from Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon) – Too Old to Die Young – was a hallucinatory but satisfying highlight, and now we’re invited to tuck into Carnival Row.

Amazon gives you… Carnival Row

They were certainly confident with this one.

According to Wikipedia, the series was renewed for a second season back in July a month before its premiere; it finally landed on Amazon Prime Video on Thursday, August 29th 2019.

René Echevarria and Travis Beacham’s series is one which wholeheartedly embraces genre hybridity. It has a lot to juggle, turning its lens to a world in which mythical creatures have escaped their targeted homes to congregate in a city staring down tensions stemming from immigration. Our central preoccupation is with a pressing murder case threatening to swallow the city whole – ambitious stuff.

It immediately captured the attention of TV enthusiasts thanks to a stellar cast, which includes the likes of Orlando Bloom (the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise), Cara Delevingne (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Karla Crome (Misfits), Jared Harris (Chernobyl) and more. However, fans’ eyes our averted to Tamzin Merchant…

Carnival Row: Tamzin Merchant

The 32-year-old actress was born in Sussex, England – according to Wikipedia – and has actually been on screens since 2005.

She’s already garnering praise for her spellbinding turn as Imogen Spurnrose on Carnival Row; if you find her familiar but can’t quite place her, you’ll surely be able to in a moment. Her breakout role was that of Georgiana Darcy in Joe Wright’s (Atonement) Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley, Rosamund Pike and Carey Mulligan.

Tamzin played Margot Durrell in My Family and Other Animals the same year. Moving onto her more notable roles it’s worth highlighting her performance as Catherine Howard in the acclaimed series The Tudors, as well as that of Mary Rivers in 2011’s Jane Eyre adaptation directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga – our new Bond director, no less!

Other projects include 2014’s Copenhagen (she played Sandra), The Messenger (Sarah), The Dancer (Kate), TV series Salem (Anna Hale) and Supergirl (Lyra Strayd).

Tamzin Merchant attends the LA Premiere of Amazon’s “Carnival Row” at TCL Chinese Theatre on August 21, 2019 in Hollywood, California.
