West Ham fans got their first glimpse of Albian Ajeti playing for Manuel Pellegrini's men on Tuesday night as the summer signing played the full 90 minutes as the Hammers secured their spot in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

The Premier League side got through what always looked set to be a tough tie, with Newport County putting in some impressive displays against strong opposition in the respective cup competitions in recent years.

The visitors had their scares at Rodney Parade, but they booked their place in the hat for the next stage. Jack Wilshere opened the scoring just before the break as he inadvertently played a one-two with one of the Newport defenders before finding the back of the net.

Pablo Fornals would add a second after the break to ensure that West Ham were safely through. It was the Spaniard's first goal for the club, but it was also a notable occasion for Ajeti as he made his first appearance for the Irons following his £8 million switch in the summer (fee reported by BBC Sport).

He failed to get on the scoresheet, but there were a number of supporters who felt that they could take positives from his West Ham bow as he worked extremely hard to try and get into the contest.

It was a tough night for the striker and he often looked isolated as Newport looked to frustrate the Hammers going forward. Some have been extremely critical of the 22-year-old and questioned whether he will prove to be good enough for the club even when he is fully up and running, but others have had a lot more sympathy for the forward and insisted that he has the ability to come good with time.
