Smith appeared for Tottenham Hotspur’s Under-23s last month

Ted Smith is back training with Southend United after a trial spell at Tottenham Hotspur, according to The Echo.

Smith appeared for Tottenham’s Under-23s last month and also auditioned with Swindon Town after leaving Southend at the end of last season.

But the 23-year-old has yet to find new employment, and seemingly won’t be joining Spurs.

Tottenham failed to renew Michel Vorm’s deal at the end of last season and opted not to replace the Dutchman in the summer transfer window, with Mauricio Pochettino’s options already comprising Hugo Lloris, Paulo Gazzaniga and Alfie Whiteman.

Whether or not Southend are interested in re-signing Smith remains to be seen.

The League One side have allowed another goalkeeper – the former Tottenham academy player, Jordan Archer – to train with them as he looks for another club, according to The Echo.

Smith played 30 times for Southend before spending 17 months on the sidelines with a shoulder injury.
