Graeme Souness has told Sky Sports that he doesn’t understand what Tottenham Hotspur defender Danny Rose was doing for Newcastle United’s goal.

Newcastle beat Tottenham 1-0, and Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s defending was called into question after the match.

Joelinton scored the only goal of the game with a well taken finish, but Tottenham defended the opportunity so poorly.

Davinson Sanchez initially gave Joelinton too much space, but Rose offered his centre-back no cover.

And Souness was baffled by the Tottenham full-back’s decision making at that moment.

“What is Danny Rose thinking? The alarm bells have got to be ringing,” Souness raged.

“When Sanchez losing his man, he’s got to think. If he has taken two strides in to think Sanchez has lost his striker, he gets a block on that shot.”

Rose was far from the only Tottenham player to perform below their ability against Newcastle yesterday, but he has started the season poorly.

Rose’s future was in question at Tottenham this season, and his failure to have a full pre-season may be part of the reason why he has struggled in the early weeks.

Tottenham are yet to really click into gear this campaign, with concerns rising about their form - especially after a poor end to last season in the league.

Tottenham are next in action against Arsenal, and another defeat would really put Mauricio Pochettino’s side under pressure.
