The West Bromwich Albion loanee did not appear at his best as the Baggies battled to a draw at Pride Park.
This summer, the Croatian midfielder linked up with The Hawthorns outfit from Portuguese giants Benfica on a season-long loan deal, Slaven Bilic’s first signing since his appointment to The Hawthorns dugout (BBC Sport).
Krovinovic – valued at £4.5million by Transfermarkt – thoroughly impressed in pre-season and played 90 minutes in each of West Brom’s first four Championship games, as well as coming off the bench in the Carabao Cup against Millwall (Transfermarkt).
However, the 23-year-old looked somewhat off the pace at Pride Park for much of the game, blazing an effort over from inside the area, similarly fluffing his lines from a free kick, although the penalty given against him was very contentious.
Here is what some West Brom fans said about Krovinovic on social media during and after the game – initially negative, more positive towards the end, but still with some reservations:
Once again it’s all very pretty but too easy for the opposition.Everything is played in front of Derby. As tidy as Krovinovic is he doesn’t run beyond anyone. Compare this with Derby’s midfielders who are always on the move.Bilic needs to work this out or it will be a waste #wba— Craig McLeod (@portlandbaggie) 24 August 2019
Krovinovic has been dreadful today #WBA— Baggies Burger (@BaggiesBurger) 24 August 2019
Krovinovic is a big part of the problem at the moment imo. Doesn’t offer enough of a goal threat in his position and he demands the ball all the time— Mitch Sprigg (@wba_mitch) 24 August 2019
I’m actually very disappointed with Krovinovic. So far hasn’t lived up to the hype.— Bomber’s Boots (@BombersBoots) 24 August 2019
I do love the man tho, but not sure why he’s been so ineffective. #WBA
#wba analysis from this game.— R (@RedmondRoleV2) 24 August 2019
1. Livermore gives the ball away way too much. Total passenger in the game.
2. As tidy as Krovinovic is, he seems to have little actual impact on the game.
3. Zohore – 8 million pounds?
4. Phillips needs to be dropped ASAP. Total passenger all game.
Johnstone superb, Ferguson woeful . Though both centre backs were good and krovinovic is ridiculously good. Needs players on his wave length like periera and diangana . #wba— Morany (@Bromayit) 24 August 2019
wasnt really a pen to us but then there second wasnt, so swings and roundabouts. plus a clear corner at 1-1 not given. bilic two yellows were for complaing at shocking decisions from the officials. take a point away at derby i suppose. krovinovic is sickkkkkkk #wba— george coley (@coleywba) 24 August 2019
I’d like to try us without Krovinovic. I think he slows it all down too much up front.— JR (@thejonreeve) 24 August 2019
It’s slow, though today I’ll give them the fact that it’s roasting hot; we need more oomph in terms of getting at defenders, I would like to see Phillips in the centre to provide that as he’s best running from deep. The wingers and Krovinovic also need to be thirstier for goals.— Dan Nash (@DanNash86) 24 August 2019
A lot of the time it’s too slow and it’s needs to be quicker needs more tempo this side does I would be inclined to drop Krovinovic and try Phillips behind the striker and Periera and Diangana out wide— Jon Simonian (@_Simonian) 24 August 2019
It’s not necessary for our strikers to have any pace in the way we play at the moment. It’s slow and gets bogged down in the build up. Hence why I’d like to try playing without Krovinovic sometime to see what happens.— JR (@thejonreeve) 24 August 2019
Up next for West Brom is next Saturday’s Championship meeting with Blackburn Rovers at The Hawthorns.
