The Toffees midfielder, on loan at Pride Park, was widely panned by some Rams fans as he struggled against the Robins.
The Rams put in a lacklustre performance as they shipped two goals to the Robins by the half-time mark, ex-Rams striker Andreas Weimann opening the scoring on 16 minutes after turning goalkeeper Kelle Roos and slotting into an empty net.
Weimann was once again involved for the second on the stroke of half time, dummying Jack Hunt's low cross and letting it reach Josh Brownhill, who duly slotted home to leave Phillip Cocu's charges with a mountain to climb.
Derby improved in the second half and dominated possession but they could not find a breakthrough until five minutes from time, substitute Jack Marriott weighing in with a great individual curling effort, but it proved too little too late.
Dowell, who linked up with the Rams in the summer having previously had loan spells at Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest, struggled in the final third and appeared a spectator for large parts of the encounter.
As such, the Toffees academy graduate received criticism from some Derby fans on social media during and after the game:
Claude Davies was a better signing than Dowell #dcfc— Phillip Cocu's Barmy Army (@MdotCPT) 20 August 2019

More comfortable with change of formation
Defensive errors really cost us the game
Jack Marriott is something else
Clarke and Keogh better crosses than Flojo and Lowe
Dowell a spectator#DCFC
I know he’s not Mount’s replacement, but I am not convinced by Kieran Dowell #DCFC— Sam Hobday (@sam_hobday) 20 August 2019
What is Jozefzoon? Dowell and huddlestone were terrible. Not a great start at home! #dcfc— Raich Cooner (@Raich89) 20 August 2019
Prefer Jason Knight over Dowell— •Kyle• (@KyleDCFC7) 20 August 2019
When Duane is back I would probably put him in the midfield instead of Dowell then maybe keep Bennett out wide. #dcfc— Jamie Probert (@Jamie_Probert1) 20 August 2019
I’m sorry but I don’t like Dowell. I don’t usually get on the players back but he’s just too pedestrian.— Leachy (@leachjakee) 20 August 2019
It looks like he’s playing just because it’s in his contract. #Dcfc
I was very disappointed with Dowell, couldn't seem to get his passing going at all. Starting to feel like back three is the way to go for #dcfc now. Bielik makes it possible, it makes up for the distinct lack of quality in wide areas and would be easier to fit Holmes and Jack in.— Derby County Blog (@derbycountyblog) 20 August 2019
If Dowell was any good he wouldn’t be out on loan he’d be playing at his parent club #dcfc— Rammie (@Rammie007) 20 August 2019
Up next for Derby is Saturday's early kickoff against West Bromwich Albion at Pride Park.
