Mainz were hoping for an immediate impact from Taiwo Awoniyi when the on-loan Liverpool striker came off the bench to make his Bundesliga debut with his side 2-0 down to Freiburg.
And it is fair to say Awoniyi changed the game – but not in the way Mainz were hoping.
Just one minute after coming onto the Schwarzald Stadion turf, the 22-year-old gifted Freiburg their third goal with a ridiculous challenge in the penalty area. He caught a Freiburg attacker with a stray boot, the most typical of ‘striker’s tackles’ with Luca Waldschmidt firing the resulting spot-kick into the corner.
So things can only get better for Awoniyi in German football.
The highly-rated Nigerian looked like a real coup of a signing for the perennial mid-table botherers, particularly after scoring seven goals in just nine league games during a similar loan spell at Royal Mouscron in Belgium last season.
And, on paper, he should provide plenty of firepower for a rather workmanlike side who scored just 46 goals in the Bundesliga last season.
Klopp knows Mainz coach Schwarz well too, having played alongside the 40-year-old before he embraced life in the dugout. And Schwarz can really do the Liverpool coach a favour by helping Awoniyi fulfil his potential in the Bundesliga - the Champions of Europe are, after all, a little short of options in the final third.
Yet it is maybe better to keep Awoniyi away from his own penalty area for the time being.
