'Superb' Djene Dakonam shows West Ham what they're missing

Premier League side West Ham United were linked with Getafe's La Liga powerhouse Djene Dakonam this summer.

What more can Djene Dakonam do to earn a big-money move to the Premier League?

Forget Sergio Ramos, Clement Lenglet or Jose Maria Gimenez, the Togo international was arguably the stand out defender in the whole of La Liga last season, the tough-tackling talisman in a high-flying Getafe team who shocked Spanish football by qualifying for the Europa League.

But despite links with West Ham United, we are hurtling towards September with Djene still commanding the Coliseum.

Marca reported earlier in the summer that the 27-year-old has an affordable £31 million release-clause in his contract. But that still did not convince West Ham, who were linked by The Express, to take a chance on him. But with Issa Diop looking out of sorts at the start of the season and with a 5-0 thrashing by Manchester City still fresh in the mind, Djene suddenly looks like one that got away already.

And a typically irrepressible display against a star-studded Atletico Madrid forward line on Sunday night once again has aficionados of Spanish football wondering why Djene still hasn’t been snapped up.
