Scottish Premiership champions Celtic reportedly want to sign George Baldock from Premier League newcomers Sheffield United.

Imagine you are a full-back making your home debut in the Premier League against an irrepressible attacking superstar with a £100 million price-tag on his head.

If Sheffield United’s George Baldock was nervous about coming up against Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha at Bramall Lane, he didn’t show it.

The Buckingham-born 26-year-old won’t dominate the back pages after the Blades sealed their first top flight in 12 years in front of their own supporters but an exceptional display certainly has not gone unnoticed.

The much-admired Zaha, who Palace wanted £100 million for just weeks ago (the Mail), was reduced to spectator status by a complete full-back performance from a former MK Dons and Oxford United defender.

Baldock made two tackles, two interceptions and six clearances, providing a platform for Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United to seal a valuable 1-0 win against an established Premier League outfit.

No wonder Neil Lennon rates him so highly. According to the Daily Record, Celtic are keen on a potential £3 million deal for a player who would walk into their starting XI based on the quality of Sunday’s performance. The Hoops need a right-back and Baldock looks like a perfect fit.

But don’t expect the Blades to sell with no chance of signing a replacement. Especially not after his Zaha-ceasing masterclass.
