Tottenham star is in contention to face Manchester City.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen was surprisingly left out of the squad last week for the club’s opening game of the season.

The Belgian was reportedly unhappy to have been left out, The Times reported, claiming it was a tactical decision from Mauricio Pochettino.

The Mail took a different line, claiming he was omitted due to poor fitness.

Whatever the truth of it, Vertonghen was involved in full training on Thursday and looked as much a part of the team as ever, laughing and joking with his teammates.

Tottenham face Manchester City this weekend and should be fielding their strongest team.

In theory this includes Vertonghen, but only if he is fully fit.

He seems happy enough, and his situation doesn’t appear to be a distraction for the team.

City scored five times last week against West Ham, and keeping their prolific attack quiet is an unenviable task.
