The St Mary's fan favourite has pledged one percent of his yearly salary to the Saints Foundation
The Saints defender makes a similar commitment to the players who have joined Juan Mata’s Common Goal organisation, the pledge-based charirable movement by Streetfootballworld for the football industry which seeks to generate social change and improve people's lives.
Yoshida's contribution, which sees him become one of the first Premier League players to make a monthly donation to a club-related cause, will help the Saints Foundation with projects in both primary and secondary schools as well as their work across their disability programmes.
In conversation with the Daily Echo, the Japan international and St Mary's cult hero said: “I had been thinking about donating for a long time and then Mata asked me to join his Common Goal initiative.
“That made me think about what I can do for Southampton and then I was invited to the Saints Foundation’s dinner and I saw the work they have done. It was amazing, and they are the ones who I want to work with. I spoke with Greg [Baker, head of Saints Foundation] and said I wanted to join.”
The club proudly announced Yoshida's pledge on their website and social media channels, which prompted a positive reaction from the Saints fanbase, for whom the defender has long been a favourite for his talent and professionalism:
