The Owls defender has failed to win a first-team place at the Hillsborough club and leaves on loan to German side Vfl Osnabruck.

A number of Sheffield Wednesday fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on the news that Owls defender Joost van Aken has joined Bundesliga 2 side VfL Osnabruck on loan for the 2019-20 season (official Wednesday website).

The 25-year-old joined the Hillsborough outfit in August 2017 from Dutch side Heerenveen for £3million - according to The Star - but has only managed 16 appearances in all competitions for the Owls, with injuries playing their part in his failure to break into the first team.

Van Aken's last competitive Owls outing came at Sunderland almost 12 months ago when he was forced off with an ankle problem and, with the likes of Tom Lees, Julian Borner, David Bates and Jordan Thorniley vying for starts at centre-back, the Dutchman is now very much surplus to requirements at Hillsborough.

The defender will immediately join up with the newly-promoted German second-tier side, the loan spell running until the end of June next year, and will hope to be involved in Monday night’s game against Darmstadt.

Here is what some Wednesday fans wrote on social media regarding Van Aken's exit:
