Former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole has admitted his concern about new Reds goalkeeper Adrian despite his penalty-saving heroics in Wednesday’s dramatic UEFA Super Cup win against Chelsea, while speaking to BT Sport (14 August, 7:00pm).
It is fair to say Adrian will remember his full debut in Liverpool colours for some time.
The veteran goalkeeper, who signed on a free over the summer as a replacement for Simon Mignolet, saved a tame spot-kick from Tammy Abraham in a dramatic penalty shoot-out to hand Liverpool yet more European glory.
Adrian certainly went from zero to hero in Istanbul, denying Abraham just minutes after bringing the Chelsea striker to the ground to gift Jorginho an equaliser during extra-time.
But Cole, who played alongside the ‘keeper at West Ham United, believes Liverpool shouldn’t get carried away about the man providing some much-needed back-up for Alisson Becker.
“I worry for him. He’s gone to Liverpool, he’s gone there knowing he’s going to be number two. Some goalkeepers get to a certain age and they settle for that,” said Cole, who spent one disappointing season at Anfield in 2009/10.
“You know you want decision-making as a goalkeeper to be on point, at West Ham he was umming and ahing and he gets caught. There’s a reason that he wasn’t in the West Ham side at the back end of the season and they tried to sign goalkeepers to replace him.
“(But) he has got talent, he’s definitely got talent.”
For now, however, Adrian has followed in the footsteps of Jerzy Dudek by inspiring Liverpool to European glory on the banks of the Bosporus.
But with Brazil number one Alisson still set for another few weeks on the sidelines, the test for Adrian now is whether he can build on the biggest moment of his career in Istanbul.
