Scott Bain has made two high-profile mistakes since Saturday.
But while the goalkeeper got away with one against Motherwell, thanks largely to a ruthless Celtic display at the other end of the pitch, the Hoops' strikers couldn’t bail him out again when Cluj came to town.
A 4-3 defeat to the Romanian minnows not only dumped the Scottish giants out of the Champions League before it even began, it has also sparked a debate about whether Bain should be replaced between the sticks.
And a couple of Celtic legends believe there’s one man who should be top of the list to take Bain’s place. Speaking to the Daily Star (13 August, page 36) Charlie Nicholas believes that Fraser Forster simply must be offered a return to Glasgow. Chris Sutton, in the Record, agrees.
But it is not just Celtic who would benefit from Forster’s return north of the border. He too is crying out for a fresh start after making just one Premier League appearance for Southampton since Boxing Day 2017.
Once an England international and one of the best keepers in the top flight, Forster has paid the price for a rapid and unexpected decline at St Mary’s with Angus Gunn and Alex McCarthy now firmly established ahead of him in the pecking order.
So perhaps the 31-year-old should get in touch with his agent in order to find out whether a return to where it all began is possible.
Celtic need a top-class goalkeeper and Forster needs a club willing to give him a chance again.
