The Black Cats defender put in a good display for Jack Ross's side as the Stadium of Light club progressed in the competition.
The 26-year-old delivered a commanding performance on his return to the Black Cats' starting XI, nearly opening the scoring from a corner and weighing in with some crucial interceptions.
Jack Ross's charges opened the scoring on 17 minutes at the Crown Ground when Marc McNulty fired into the far corner of the hosts' net for his first goal since signing on loan from Reading in the summer.
Although Colby Bishop sent Lee Burge the wrong way from the penalty spot just after the hour, Aiden McGeady and Charlie Wyke struck two fine late goals to put Sunderland into the second round.
Here is what some of the Black Cats faithful made of the 6ft 3in defender's display on social media during and after the game:
32' A lot of positive stuff here from Sunderland. The change to a back 4 seems to be working well, Ozturk sounds like he's making a positive impact back into the team.— A LOVE SUPREME (@ALS_Fanzine) August 13, 2019
Ozturk has been neat and tidy at the back so far, making a couple of important interceptions to break up Accrington attacks. #SAFC still to really get going at the other end. 0-0— Scott Wilson (@Scottwilsonecho) August 13, 2019
Good half. On top. Creating chances. Taking lead for 1st time this season. Striker scoring. More positive than first few games. @sparkymcnulty getting 1st lads goal and Ozturk impressing at back. Keep it going and take momentum into Pompey. C'MON SUNDERLAND!!! #SAFC #HawayTheLads https://t.co/vACU94Nlih— Ian Crow (@Ian_Crow3) August 13, 2019
Ozturk needs to start on Saturday. Made the defence look so much more organised— Jamie (@JamieSAFC_) August 13, 2019
Ozturk is the difference and back 4 suits them.— SAFC&Golf (@Safcgolfer75) August 13, 2019
Connor Mclaughlain is no better than any of our defenders from last season. I’ve thought that before tonight - he’s done nothing to force me to consider changing my mind.— @SAFC1973 (@SAFCFANSVIEW) August 13, 2019
Play a back four with Ozturk & Willis Centre backs. #SAFC
And defensively Alim 'The Dream' Ozturk also a shout for MOTM. Impressed on return to side and at the weekend him and @J2Willis should start in a back 4 after tonight with @LukeONien at RB imo. LB needed badly, but great to see secure defensive performance. #SAFC #HawayTheLads— Ian Crow (@Ian_Crow3) August 13, 2019
Ozturk In Flanaghan Out— @SAFC1973 (@SAFCFANSVIEW) August 13, 2019
O9 In Mclaughlain Out
Wyke in Grigg out
Hard call for central midfield but I’m favouring a 442 Saturday, providing Hume is fit. #SAFC
No nonsense. Better than flanagan 100%.— JamSarny (@Jam_Sarny) August 13, 2019
Ozturk is now officially the best centre back we have at the club need to have him fit for most of the season like #safc— jakeykirkbride (@JacobKirkbride) August 14, 2019
Nice to wake to a win... Ozturk for Flanny please.. Wyke will be important this season.. Lets not get carried away though #safc— SpB (@Transporter8T) August 14, 2019
Ozturk is an accident waiting to happen, but he defends better than the others— Mick Pereira (@marathon_mick69) August 14, 2019
Up next for Sunderland in the competition is a trip to Burnley's Turf Moor in the week commencing 26 August, while the Black Cats' next game is Portsmouth at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
