The Rams loanee's deadline-day arrival at Pride Park was met with criticism by some fans of parent club Huddersfield.
Phillip Cocu's charges got through a tricky tie at Glanford Park as debutant Lee Buchanan drilled home a fine finish inside the Iron box with 12 minutes to go, and their reward is a second-round clash at bitter rivals Nottingham Forest.
Hamer, who joined Derby on loan from Huddersfield Town on transfer deadline day as a replacement for the Manchester City-bound Scott Carson, was alert on his Rams debut and pulled off a great save on 53 minutes to keep out Adam Hamill's shot.
The 31-year-old had a tricky season last time out for Huddersfield and his acquisition by Derby saw quite a few Terriers fans weigh in with criticism, as can be seen from some of the reaction on social media, with two examples below.
Awful . The only keeper I’ve seen concede a corner from his own goal kick— Warren Green (@WazzaHTFC) 8 August 2019
A lot of town fans will exaggerate how bad he is, here’s the truth, he’s the worst goalkeeper I’ve ever seen and the lad may as well sit down in net— Laurence (@LaurenceC2207) 8 August 2019
As it turned out, Hamer put in a solid display against Scunthorpe, with his save in particular earning praise from some Derby fans:
Not a great game. But thumbs up for Bielik, Hamer, Buchanan in particular #dcfc— Andy Buckley-Taylor (@BuckTaylor64) 14 August 2019
Ben Hamer that’s a stupidly good save— Callum Edworthy (@CallumEdworthy) 13 August 2019
Up next for Derby is Saturday's Championship trip to Stoke City, then two league games at Pride Park against Bristol City and West Bromwich Albion respectively, and then comes the big derby against the Reds at the City Ground.
