Craig Gordon should be given a chance to take over from Scott Bain at Celtic

Scott Bain has made two errors in his last two matches.

Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain's future in the first-team is now surely in doubt, at least in the short-term.

The 27-year-old was given the nod by manager Neil Lennon in last night's UEFA Champions League defeat to CFR Cluj at Celtic Park, despite being at fault for a Motherwell goal on Saturday.

His evening against the Romanians didn't go better, conceding four goals on the night, one of which he was partially culpable for.

With Celtic ahead 3-2 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate, the goalkeeper failed to deal with a speculative shot from the edge of the box, parrying it straight into the path of Billel Omrani who fired home to put Cluj in control with just ten minutes remaining.

The Hoops number one should have done much better and must take his share of responsibility for the European defeat, along with others at Celtic Park.

His distribution has also been questionable recently and solutions must be found quickly.

With a Scottish League Cup fixture against Dunfermline coming up this weekend, Lennon now has the perfect opportunity to drop Bain drama free and give Craig Gordon an opportunity to reclaim his spot between the sticks.

The veteran goalkeeper didn't do much wrong before being dropped by Brendan Rodgers in January and hasn't really had a run of games to prove he can still perform in the position.

Craig Gordon of Celtic looks on after conceding a goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on December 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Some may argue that Gordon isn't of the calibre Celtic need either, but he's what they've got at the moment and with just a couple of weeks until the transfer window shuts then signing another 'keeper looks like a tall order.

It's fair to say some fans are eager for Bain to be dropped, with these fans taking to Twitter to share their thoughts...

Whether Lennon feels the need to do so remains to be seen.

What's clear at least is there is now huge pressure on the manager's selection calls and in turn on players like Bain.

With mistakes and errors piling up and massive matches on the horizon at home and abroad, there's no room for sentimentality and brave decisions must be made.
