Former Leicester City defender Sean St Ledger has paid tribute to Viktor Johansson after the highly-rated goalkeeper shone during Monday’s Premier League 2 opener against Everton, speaking to the club’s official website.
The 20-year-old shot-stopper would have been fully aware about the task awaiting him at the Pure Stadium. David Unsworth’s Everton won the Premier League 2 title last season after all.
But Johansson ensured that the reigning champions endured a frustrating start to the new campaign with a sensational display between the sticks, denying Dennis Adeniran, Kyle John and Fraser Hornby to secure a point for ten-man Leicester.
No wonder St Ledger was impressed.
"It has to be Viktor Johansson for my Man of the Match tonight. He has made some really important saves,” said the former Ireland international.
"His kicking was really good as well and he's picked up from where he left off last season. His saves were top class at times and he kept City in the game today."
Johansson is not the only talented Scandinavian goalkeeper at the King Power Stadium however and he certainly has a challenge ousting the experienced Kasper Schmeichel from Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI in the coming years.
But there’s no reason why the young Swede cannot target a senior debut over the coming months with plenty of cup games on the horizon.
